Bon Voyage, Frog Eyes
As you might’ve read this week, our old pals Frog Eyes are calling it quits. Their final album–Violet Psalms–will be released May 18 on Paper Bag Records, just as the first leg of their final tour kicks off. Like many other fans around the world, I’m saddened by this news.
The first release on Soft Abuse, way back in early 2003, was a single from the then-Victoria band Frog Eyes, which I’d discovered in a roundabout way after hearing the sole Blue Pine CD sometime in 2001. By the time that CD was released, the Blue Pine was no more; in their place was this new band with some of the same members, and they already had an album out. I remember buying the CD from Scratch right away (via telephone), then sourced a couple of copies from the label (Global Symphonic) for friends & to sell in the shop where I was working in Florida. What an awesome album. I threw caution to the wind & emailed “firstname.lastname@example.org”–the address listed in The Bloody Hand CD credits–and heard back from Carey Mercer. After a few messages I asked if I could release something from them, via my record label, which of course didn’t exist…. I had a bunch of possible names for the label, most referenced paintings I was particularly fond of at that time, but Carey plucked Soft Abuse from the list of possibilities, & a few months later I was assembling singles in my house with a group of friends.
I’ve seen Frog Eyes two dozen times over the years, in Texas, Florida, New York, Minnesota, and probably more places I’m forgetting. The line-up shifted a bit over time, but the band was always great, thanks in part to its two principles: Mel & Carey. I look forward to seeing Frog Eyes in California this summer, for two shows with The Skygreen Leopards as well as tour-mates Hello Blue Roses opening. See you there?
